“Look, maybe the boss will cut us some slack this time. I mean, they did kiss, right?” Tweetledumb didn’t want to admit it, but seeing his partner so down…hurt. When did I start worrying about how he feels? “C’mon. Chin up, bub. Maybe we should just call it a night.”
“What?” Tweetledumber whirled on him, horns sparking in anger despite his tears. He wheezed out, “We can’t just leave things like this! With that thing running around!”
“Why not?”
“What if it hurts someone? I know the whole broken heart non-liability clause is there in our work orders, but I don’t think that covers slashed jugulars and stuff.” Tweetledumber sank down on his haunches, rocking back and forth with his head in his hands. “Sweet Aphrodite, it’s all my fault.”
Again. “No, no. Just a piece of bad luck.” Tweetledumb patted his shoulder awkwardly. “But I really don’t know what you expect us to do now.”
Tweetledumber was silent so long, he was afraid his partner had started crying again. Suddenly, his head popped up, a speculative look in his beautiful, pink eyes. “What if…we could do it again?”
“Do what again?” Tweetledumb plunked down beside his partner. The poor imp was obviously coming unglued.
“One dart brought that awful thing to life, and made it nasty. What do you think a second one would do?”
“Make it nastier?”
Tweetledumber shook his head, excitement replacing despair. “No, no! If you think about it, it should reverse the whole thing. Turn it back into a nice, inanimate, fluffy teddy.”
“It was an ugly, obnoxious teddy to begin with…”
“You know what I mean.”
“I suppose…it can’t make things worse.”
Tweetledumber flung his arms around his partner and planted a kiss right on his confounded lips. “I love you. Mmm, chocolate.” He cocked his head to one side. “You haven’t been drinking right out of the chocolate fountain again, have you?”
“No.” Tweetledumb licked a bit off the corner of his mouth. “Maybe. You love me?”
“You know, I think I do.”
